own.2 There has been another report of this condition with another rheumatic disease, rheumatoid arthritis.3 As such cases tend to be reported in ophthalmological journals it is possible that this association may be more common than is realised. We would like to draw your attention to a case of 'Brown's syndrome' that we have previously reported in association with another connective tissue disease, scleroderma.4 The patient was a 27 year old Eurasian woman who had had scleroderma with diffuse skin involvement for 10 years. There was marked systemic disease with joint contractures, scleroderma oesophagus, and restrictive lung disease. She had previously been treated intermittently with oral prednisolone and D-penicillamine without any marked benefit and was currently taking cimetidine and receiving periodic oesophageal dilatation for her gastro-oesophageal reflux and conse-

Background and Objective: Patients with hypothyroidism require thyroid hormone replacement. Many studies have shown that bone density reduction is caused by suppressive doses of levothyroxine, but there are contradictory results regarding the effect of levothyroxine replacement dose (non suppressive). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of replacement doses of levothyroxine ...
متن کاملMonitoring hormone replacement therapy by biochemical markers of bone metabolism in menopausal women.
Biochemical markers of bone metabolism are divided into two groups: formation and resorption markers. Bone turnover is a dynamic process, which increases in postmenopausal period. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can diminish this increased bone turnover. Biochemical markers reflect acute changes in bone metabolism. Therefore, they may be very useful for the prediction of subsequent bone miner...

Background: Osteoporosis is a prevalent bone disease caused by an imbalance between bone formation and resorption. Nutritional factors are involved in the prevention of osteoporosis. Several treatments exist for osteoporosis including bisphosphonates, parathyroid hormone, estrogen therapy, and hormone therapy, which have their own side effects. In the quest for an appropriate treatment for os...

Background: Functional hypothalamic menstrual disorder (FHMD) has a destructive effect on the athlete’s bone mineral density and cardiovascular system. Utilizing hormone replacement therapy to treat FHMD in athletes is controversial. This study was conducted to examine the effect of hormone therapy on bone density and the cardiovascular system of professional female athletes with FHMD. ...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence on urinary excretion levels of N-telopeptide of type I collagen (NTX) and deoxypyridinoline (DPD) as a useful marker for bone resorption, and on serum-bone alkaline phosphate (BAP) levels as a useful marker for bone formation and an early marker of osteoblast differentiation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with methot...
